The Human Library Organization
Don't judge a book by its cover
The Human Library Organisation is a registered international not for profit with our administrative headquarters located in Copenhagen, Denmark. We meet our goals by creating a special dialogue room, where taboo topics can be discussed openly and without condemnation. A place where people who would otherwise never talk find room for conversation. The Human Library works to create a safe framework for personal conversations that can help to challenge prejudice, get aim to help rid discrimination, prevent conflicts and contribute to greater human cohesion across social, religious and ethnic divisions. This library lets you borrow people instead of books. It just may help bridge our bitter divisions. |
My experience
Over the last few years, as part of the Human Library, I have been honored to 'read' inspiring 'books' all over the world. The 'books' are people who have been through powerful experiences and trauma. Often their voice is not heard. This platform allows for a safe place for people to be readers of a live open book who is able to share their experience and to answer any questions a ready might have. A book that can actively converse with the reader. Brilliant.
I have had the honour to be a 'book' myself telling various stories of traumatic experiences that have made me stronger than I ever thought possible...from initial diagnosis of the brain cancer in 2004 to a near drowning incident in 2023. When readers ask questions of my experiences I often see it from a different perspective. What fascinates me is that while two persons can have drastically different experiences resulting in trauma that can be expressed in very different ways, there is always something that we can relate to. As humans. In an endless library of incredible stories. Ultimately,I feel this project helps to bring people together. Perhaps we can have vastly different ways of seeing the world but can share and relate to each others on one level helping to link our human condition. |
I felt a sense of hope at a time when the world is challenging and divided
